Exactly three years have passed since its opening, and Pórodnica Bory has become the largest in Slovakia. During that time, 7,833 children were born in it. At the same time, neonatologists took care of more than 560 premature babies in the most modern intensive care unit for newborns in Slovakia during three years. On the occasion of Children’s Day, newborns in the hospital will also receive a small gift today.

“Today we can say that we managed to build the largest maternity hospital in Slovakiawe are the third or fourth largest maternity hospital in Czechoslovakia. This makes us very happy, as well as the interest of mothers in giving birth here. We have patients from Nitra, Trenčín, the south of Slovakia, exceptionally from Austria.This is related not only to the quality of the space and modern equipment, but also to the expertise of the staff, as we can provide mothers with truly comprehensive care. And we keep moving forward in that,” evaluated by the clinical leader of the department of gynecology, obstetrics and neonatology of Bory Hospital, Doc. MUDr. Mikuláš Redecha, PhD.

Today the maternity ward can take care of practically every mother-to-be in a high-risk pregnancy from beginning to end, including women with diabetes, high blood pressure, the risk of premature birth, women after repeated abortions or patients who had trouble getting pregnant, while cooperating with the largest IVF centers in Bratislava. Mothers can give birth in Bory Maternity Hospital from the 28th week of pregnancy and in individual cases also from the 24th week.

The Neonatal Department, which is headed by primary care physician MUDr. Irena Dobišová, has the most modern neonatal intensive care unit in Slovakiawhere the parent is part of the intensive care of the child and is present at all his examinations. Immature babies are kangarooed in the ICU from day one. In the Central European area, it is the only ICU of the Family Integrated Care in NICU type. The smallest child born in the maternity hospital weighed approximately 900 grams. In addition, the maternity hospital has its own breast milk bank.

“How We were the first and so far the only ones in Slovakia to open a Center for Fetal Medicine at Bory Hospitalwhich deals with the treatment of the fetus during intrauterine development. We perform intrauterine transfusions, invasive prenatal diagnostics, and we were the first in Slovakia to start to treat complications in identical twins using laser procedures directly in the womb“ notes Redech.

The maternity ward also has Midwifery Center a approximately 60 to 80 percent of physiological births are conducted by midwives. Of course, the doctor is always present and ready to help, but the birth itself is led by a midwife.

Every birth at the Bory Hospital is covered by the standard reimbursement by the health insurance company free of charge. However, the hospital also offers additional Nateo paid programs with other services such as Mama Academy, extra food, baby photography, pregnancy massage and the like. Registrations are always opened four months in advance.

Have births taken place in the hospital that cannot be forgotten?

“Among those thousands of children, there are also stories that cannot be forgotten – often, for example, they are complicated cases that turned out well in the end. We had, for example, patients who were cervical cancer diagnosed during pregnancy“ Redech remembers.

If the woman were not pregnant, the standard procedure would be surgery to remove the uterus and subsequent chemotherapy or radiotherapy. However, such a procedure is not possible during pregnancy.

“Therefore, the patients were given specially chosen chemotherapy, which did not endanger the child, but at the same time was able to stop the progression of the disease, even if it did not definitively cure the cancer itself. Radical gynecological surgery was subsequently performed during the birth – the obstetric team first brought the child into the world, and then we, as oncogynecologists, continued with the surgical intervention. In both cases the treatment was successful – women today are healthy and have healthy children“ added Redech.
