According to him, his death was “sudden and unexpected”. In the family’s statement, it was also said that the star was “cancer-free”.
Neill had made his leukemia illness public in 2023. In his autobiography “Did I Ever Tell You This” (Hab ich Dir das je erzählt) he wrote that he has been treated for non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma since March 2022 and will possibly die from it.

In an interview with the Guardian Neill said at the time that despite treatment success, he would undergo chemotherapy for the rest of his life. “I can’t pretend that last year didn’t have its dark moments,” said Neill in the interview. He is “grateful for every day and immeasurably grateful for all my friends”.
Neill’s long acting career began in the 1970s and brought him dozens of roles in film and television, including the series “Peaky Blinders” as well as the films “The Hunt for Red October” and “The Piano”. In 2022, he played the role of paleontologist Dr. Alan Grant.
