New lives: Over 4,500 babies thanks to donation

Over 4,500 babies have been born in the 12 years since Donation Mothers Foundation was established. More than 5,200 women and men have sought out the organization to donate eggs, sperm and embryos, and in the last year alone, more than 400 donor procedures have been performed, the civil association reported on the occasion of its anniversary.

Behind the happy statistics, however, there is also an alarming trend among some donor candidates, “Mothers for Donation” report. When conducting the mandatory and free medical tests for each donor candidate – virology, microbiology and genetic tests with more than 400 carriers of diseases and other specific ones, they report an increase in dropped candidates due to deteriorating health.

In about 50 female egg donor candidates, tests showed the presence of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV), tumor formations, fibro-adenomas, endocrine problems, etc.

Not a small number of young men were also refused a donation due to seriously deteriorated indicators of the spermogram.

Thus, the desire of the candidate donors to help another family becomes the best prevention for their personal health, and the organization provides full support with directions to the relevant medical specialists and covering the costs of the subsequent treatment and medications.

Results

The Foundation reports that for 12 years, nearly 3,000 families have been financially supported for examinations, in vitro procedures (with own and donor eggs and embryos) and specific research – hormonal, immunological, DNA fragmentation.

Costs for medical interventions such as biopsies, laparo- and hysteroscopies, examinations of already born children and their mothers, as well as family health examinations are covered.

Over the past year, the Donor Mothers Foundation has continued to fund the drug treatment of young girls with cancer to preserve their future reproductive options after their therapy is completed.
