Big shock in Norway. Olympic champion Olaf Tufte died suddenly. In his country, he was considered one of the greatest sports heroes Norway has ever had.

Norwegian former rowing champion Olaf Tufte died on Tuesday at the age of 50. This was announced by his family. According to Norwegian media reports, the two-time Olympic champion was found unconscious on his farm. Despite immediate help, his life could not be saved. The cause of death is unknown.

“Our thoughts are with Olaf’s family in this unimaginable and difficult situation. He was a fantastic family man, person and athlete. He always gave his whole heart and soul to the people around him and to rowing. Olaf Tufte was a legend in rowing, with a tireless will to seek improvement in all areas.” it is stated in the official statement of the Norwegian Rowing Association.

“It is difficult and heartbreaking to process this sad news. He was still in Arungen last Friday sharing his knowledge with some promising rowers who will represent Norway this summer. As always, Olaf was positive and energetic. It is simply unimaginable that he is no longer with us. May his memory rest in peace.”

Olaf Tufte participated in seven Olympic Games between 1996 and 2021. He won gold in the skiff at the 2004 and 2008 Games. He also became the world skiff champion twice. In addition, he won a silver and a bronze Olympic medal in the double sculls. During his last Games in Tokyo, he competed at the age of 45 in the quadruple sculls.

“Tufte has brought countless moments of sporting happiness to our country,” said Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre.

“He was one of Norway’s greatest sporting heroes, a very successful Olympian, one of the best rowers we’ve ever had and a great role model for many.”
