The CFL uses the summer months for extensive construction work on the rail network. These train connections are interrupted or adjusted between July and September.
Every year again: this summer too, the CFL uses the long holiday weeks to carry out extensive maintenance and modernization work on Luxembourg’s rail network. As the railway operator announced on July 1, train traffic on several routes will be interrupted or adjusted. As a replacement, an extensive replacement bus offer is used in cooperation with Germany, France and Belgium. In addition, passengers can change to RGTR and Tice buses.
The following lines are affected.

Luxembourg-Thionville-Metz
No trains run between Luxembourg and Thionville from July 16 to August 23. According to the CFL, travelers must expect an extension of the driving time of around 45 minutes. The following bus lines will be set up for this purpose:
- Line L90 runs from Luxembourg (Gare Rocade) via Bettemburg and Hettange-Grande to Thionville and serves all the usual train stops. It runs every 30 minutes during rush hour, otherwise every hour. Additional buses depart from Hettange-Grande in the direction of Luxembourg during morning rush hour.
- The line L91 connects Luxembourg (Gare Rocade) via Howald, PE Howald directly with Thionville every 20 to 30 minutes. Some buses only run between Thionville and Howald PE during peak hours.
- The L92 line offers a direct connection between Luxembourg and Thionville. During rush hours, rides take place every five to ten minutes. In addition, a TGV bus is available for TGV passengers, which is based on the timetable of the connections from Metz.
Luxembourg-Esch-Rodange
Train traffic on the Luxembourg-Bettemburg route will be suspended between July 16 and August 14. Three bus lines serve as alternatives:
- The L60 line connects Luxembourg (Gare routière) via Howald PE with Bettemburg and runs every five to ten minutes during rush hour, otherwise every 20 minutes.
- Line L61 runs mornings, evenings and weekends as a supplement to the RGTR service from Luxembourg (Gare routière) via Howald PE and Bivingen, Schoul (Berchem) to Bettemburg.
- The L62 line offers a direct connection between Luxembourg (bus station) and Esch. At peak times, a departure takes place every 15 minutes, outside of peak times every 30 minutes.
There will be no trains on the Luxembourg-Esch and Noertzingen-Rümelingen routes from August 15 to 23. Here, too, the CFL refers to several alternatives:
- The L60 bus line connects Luxembourg (Gare routière) via Bettemburg with Esch and serves the stops Howald PE, Bettemburg, Noertzingen and Schifflingen en route. During rush hour it runs every five to ten minutes, outside every 20 minutes.
- The L61 line runs the same route as the L60 with the additional stop Bivingen, Schoul (Berchem), and complements the RGTR offer especially in the morning, evening and at the weekend.
- The L62 line offers a direct connection between Luxembourg (bus station) and Esch. Buses run every 15 minutes at peak times and 30 minutes outside peak times.
- The CFL asks travelers on the route Rümelingen-Noertzingen to use the existing RGTR and TICE line buses.
No trains run between Bettemburg and Volmerange-les-Mines from 16 to 31 July and from 15 to 30 August. As a replacement, the L63 bus line is used, which serves all the stops on the railway line. The buses run every half hour. From August 1 to 14, an adapted timetable applies on the route. During this period, the trains continue to run, but at half-hourly intervals and with slightly changed departure times.

According to CFL, the new Howald traffic junction is in the final phase of construction. After the commissioning of the two platforms in March 2026, two 24-ton escalators will be installed per platform in the summer, which should facilitate access between the train, tram and bus station. In addition, the work on the roofs should be completed and internal access roads for maintenance work completed. Complete commissioning, including bus and tram connections, is planned for the last quarter of 2026.
The construction of the new additional line between Luxembourg and Bettemburg is also progressing according to the railway operator. During the closure period, final track work will be carried out on a roughly 250 meter long section in the area north of the Bettemburg station. These works require temporary interruptions of rail traffic between Bettemburg and Esch and serve to connect the new route to the station at a later date. In addition, drainage systems as well as a new underpass to connect two districts in Bettemburg will be realized. The work on overhead lines and signal technology also continues. The commissioning of the additional line is planned for September 2027.
Between Livingen and Berchem, the track bed and tracks will also be renewed on a length of 300 meters. Between Bettemburg and Düdelingen, sleepers will be replaced on a total length of 450 m.
Luxembourg-Ettelbrück-Ulflingen-Gouvy and Kautenbach-Wiltz
No trains will run on the Luxembourg-Ettelbrück-Ulflingen-Gouvy and Kautenbach-Wiltz railway lines between August 24 and September 14 (2 a.m.). Several bus lines serve as substitutes:
- The L14 line connects Ettelbrück, Clerf, Ulflingen and Gouvy. It runs every hour from Monday to Friday, every two hours on weekends.
- The L15 line runs every half hour between Ettelbrück, Wilwerwiltz, Drauffelt, Clerf and Ulflingen.
- The direct connection L16 runs every hour from Monday to Friday between Ettelbrück and Wiltz.
- The L17 line connects Ettelbrück, Michelau, Goebelsmühle, Kautenbach and Wiltz. It runs every hour from Monday to Friday, and every 30 minutes from 9:22 a.m. on weekends.

During the closure, the CFL renews the tracks between Fünfbrunnen (Cinqfontaines) and Ulflingen as well as between Kautenbach and the Paradiso stop. A total of 3.7 kilometers of track will be modernized.
In addition, the CFL secures rock walls along the northern route by installing metal nets over a length of 300 meters. In addition, repairs as well as cleaning and maintenance work at various stations and stops along the northern route are on the program.
Luxembourg-Wasserbillig-Trier
On the Luxembourg-Igel railway line, the CFL will interrupt train traffic between August 24 and September 14 (4 a.m.).
According to its own information, the CFL is currently preparing a replacement bus service for the period of the interruption of the train service between Luxembourg and Germany. Depending on the connection, it is possible for passengers to continue taking the train. The CFL is renovating the border bridge between Wasserbillig and Germany together with the German DB InfraGo AG. The works include the expansion and re-laying of the tracks, repair work in the structure, the sealing of the road surface and drainage system as well as the renovation of the masonry in the area of the abutments.
Luxembourg-Kleinbettingen-Arlon
Between Luxembourg and Kleinbettingen, the trains continue to run every 30 minutes, but with adjusted timetables. The French SNCB is setting up a replacement bus for the route between Kleinbettingen and Arlon. The IC trains to and from Brussels-Midi will also be replaced by buses between Luxembourg and Arlon.
Due to construction work, adjusted timetables apply on the Luxembourg-Kleinbettingen-Arlon route from July 13 to July 20. From July 20 to and including August 9, 2026, fewer trains run there. (read)

During the interruptions to the rail traffic, the Belgian infrastructure operator Infrabel carries out maintenance and renewal work on the tracks in the area of the Belgian-Luxembourg border crossing.
