Car maintenance is becoming more expensive: the prices of spare parts, fuel and services are rising. That’s why experienced mechanic and popular car blogger Scotty Kilmer advises drivers to take some simple steps that will ensure less frequent visits to service stations.

Battery check
If the battery suddenly fails, the car simply won’t start. You can check the battery with an inexpensive tester or for free at an auto parts store where such diagnostics are often done. If the device shows a low percentage of remaining capacity or a red zone, it is better not to wait for the morning when the car will not wake up, but to change it.
Next is the generator
It charges the battery while the engine is running, and it can be very expensive to replace. To check, you need a multimeter: with the car turned off and the battery fully charged, it usually shows about 12.6 V, and after starting the engine – about 13.6 V or more. If the voltage drops when you turn on a load such as the air conditioner and audio system, the generator may be close to trouble.
Belts and hoses don’t last forever either
Drive system belts typically last about 5-7 years, but cracks, heavy wear, or low tension are reasons not to delay replacement. The strap itself is cheap, but breaking it can lead to much more unpleasant consequences. Sometimes it’s cheaper to look under the hood with a flashlight than to pay for a major repair later.
Oil change
Kilmer also advises changing the engine oil every 5,000 miles. Oil, filter and gasket can be bought as a set, the main thing is to choose the viscosity and specifications according to the car manual.
Tires are a separate topic
Their pressure should be checked at least once every two weeks, especially with a sudden change in temperature. Over-inflated or under-inflated rims reduce fuel economy, accelerate wear and can ruin handling. It is better to have the wheels adjusted in a service center and not save on new tires: the consequences of a flat tire at high speed are more expensive than any set.
Gearbox service
For cars with an automatic transmission, the mechanic recommends changing the transmission fluid every 60,000-70,00 km, even if the manufacturer talks about a longer interval or “eternal” fluid. It is difficult to do such work on your own, so it is better to consult a specialist.
The main idea here is simple: the reliability of the car depends not only on the brand. Even a good car can be driven to expensive repairs if it is driven like it was last. Basic checks give the driver the most important thing – a chance to find the problem before the service bill notices it.
