Georgi Valchev: May 24 is a triumph of the Bulgarian word, knowledge and spirit

The Minister of Education and Science Prof. Georgi Valchev with a greeting on the occasion of May 24 – Day of the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius, of the Bulgarian alphabet, education and culture and of Slavic literature.

On May 24, Bulgaria celebrates its brightest holiday – of speech, knowledge and spirit. This is a day on which we pay tribute to the work of the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius, to their students and to all those generations of Bulgarians who preserved and passed on the power of letters, enlightenment and literature. A day when we remember that spirituality and education are the basis of any true national development, says Valchev.

“Often, caught up in the anxieties of everyday life, we fail to realize how much Bulgaria has achieved through its education, culture and spirituality. Less than two centuries ago, during the Renaissance, in the conditions of foreign rule, almost every Bulgarian village had the desire and aspiration to build a school. People collected funds and invested their own labor, because they knew that the future of the children and the future of the nation depended on education. Then the school was the cause of the whole community.

And today, more than ever, we need to return to this understanding – that education is not only the concern of the teacher or the institutions. It is a common mission. Children succeed when they are surrounded by a society that believes in the power of knowledge. When there are families who support the school. And last but not least – when there are teachers who don’t just teach, but inspire young people and help them discover themselves.

It is today that we need this strong union between school, family and society, because that is the only way we can build not just educated young people, but individuals – thinking, free and responsible for the future of Bulgaria”, adds the Minister of Education.

The work of the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius also leaves us with another important lesson – that a nation that preserves its language, literature and spiritual memory has a future and can withstand all kinds of trials. The Bulgarian literary tradition is one of our most significant contributions to European cultural history. It is our duty to protect and develop it, says Prof. Georgi Valchev.

And he adds: “And together with the development of modern sciences and new technologies, we must maintain respect for the Bulgarian language, for literature, history and those researchers and teachers who dedicate their lives to the study and preservation of our literary heritage. This is an invaluable contribution of Bulgaria to world culture – a contribution for which we must take care and responsibility.

Today, when the world is changing at an extraordinary speed, when new technologies put before us ever greater opportunities and trials, we must not lose the spiritual orientations that have preserved us as a people. Because education is not just the accumulation of knowledge. It is faith in the human in man. In his abilities, in his growth. Even in his goodness. In a world of technology and digital noise, it is education that preserves our ability to discern truth, meaning and humanity.”

On this festive day, let’s pay tribute to all the teachers, professors, scientists, creators and cultural figures who keep the Bulgarian spirit alive. Let us also thank all the patriots who preserve the language, memory and connection with Bulgaria in our hundreds of Sunday schools abroad, says Prof. Valchev.

Happy May 24 – Day of the holy brothers Cyril and Methodius, of the Bulgarian alphabet, education and culture, and of Slavic literature! Salute to all those who build the future of Bulgaria with words, knowledge and true dedication!, concludes the Minister of Education.
